Read the description below on updates on how to stop Microsoft from automatically doing forced reboots / restarts on your Windows 10 device.
EDIT 2:
NEW FIX for WINDOWS 10 RETAIL!
Open this folder in File Explorer:
C:WindowsSystem32TasksMicrosoftWindowsUpdateOrchestrator
Rename the file name Reboot without an extension to Reboot.bak.
Create an empty folder here instead and name it Reboot.
This will prevent the auto update from rebooting your PC, allowing you to control when you reboot.
Edit: Sorry but M$ did something to where these work arounds don’t work anymore to stop their bullshit Tyranny and control of OUR machines. Someone needs to get a bill going to protect our rights of our physical property from software developers. Forced restarts without warning and without being able to delay is unacceptable.
Here’s a quick fix if you want to disable Windows 10 consumer editions auto restart feature after an auto update patch. It requires one change in windows registry by changing a 0 to a 1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsUpdateAU and change the DWord 32 value of NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers from 0 to 1.
For Windows Enterprise you need to use the Local Group Policy Editor by typing Win + R, then gpedit.msc, enter, then got to Computer Configuration – Administrative Templates – Windows Components – Windows Update and sort the table you see to the right by the setting setting column. Then find and double click on “No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations” and change the radio button from “Not Configured” to “Enabled” and press APPLY then OK.
This will prevent windows from automatically restarting your computer after it does an update. Instead you will have to now on manually restart to have important updates apply. This will protect your bitcoin and other cryptocurrency wallets from corrupting by a forced restart. As well as prevent other data corruption that happens with Windows 10 automatic forced restarts.

0:13 how does a restart corrupt a blockchain?
changed the setting in Local Group Policy Editor. thanks so much for sharing! this is such a frustrating experience when your OS kills your files due to a forced reboot. hate micosoft so much right now… grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
This did NOT work for me. I've had the Value on this key set to 1 for over a year and just had an auto restart last night. It's so frustrating, how can I permanently stop windows from restarting automatically???
Suggest putting dates with your edits so everyone knows how recent they are and which one is newest. Great info and thanks!
I was playing a game and windows 10 decided it was time to reboot. No warning, acted like I pressed the reset button.
They'll stop doing the motherfuckin forced restart when the company can't no longer sell their shitty SurfacePro
the key wasn't there, hopefully adding it will have solved the problem. I'm so sick of this shit, this is like the 7th attempt I've tried to stop this. Can we just open up a class action suite against Microsoft. Something this stupid should not be allowed to get through an operating system used by half the world.
I was in the middle of a fucking interview and guess what!!!! had to restore due to my password not working due to a bug in your fucking update microsoft. Thanks for costing me the job assholes!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah that didn't work. Thanks anyway.
dont fking work
Easy peasy!
nope not working everytime my pc restart it self. i have server running everytime i have to login back
Is it bad if I don't even have the "Windows Update" directory with AU in it?
Doesn't work. Went to registry and I've already set to NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers to '1'. PC just restarted… It's the middle of night and woke me up just now, windows refreshed all my web pages left open and had a few you tube clips start up. Volume level was up so loud it woke me from my sleep. I can't go back to sleep now with this annoying invasion of my privacy. UP YOURS MICROSOFT!!!!!
Mine is set to 1, yet it will install bypass the 2am install time and restart without warning.
I'm probably going to install a Linux distro and just have a dual boot system. I've been meaning to do this for quite a while but I feel that it is time.
Damn fuckers, how many times they restarted my computer at night without saving files or while running simulations. They made me lose money and time. We should sue them.
Hi,
What do you mean by "Create an empty folder here instead and name it Reboot.
"?
Did you meant an empty "file" named "Reboot"?
Depending on the guide… you will find it with or without a space between "windows" and "update" and with or without an "S" to "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUser"… and some tells you to create all those things to different registry's directory.
At the end I'm a bit confused… and… i'm not willing to wait an other update to see if all my work had been screwed by windows update autoreboot during night…. :/
I'd be very thankful if someone could report "PRECISELY" a very recent working solution with windows 10 Home 64bit. 😉
Bullshit !!!
I do not have Windows Update but my computer still restarts itself and says update successful
can this process work to prevent a restart that is not windows update related?
Thank you!
Ive had an update on windows 10 64 bit and failed to update and know its a loop from restarting i used everything in my knowledge i used the f11 key and luck and need helping getting to my startup home screen. Any no luck useful thanks kindly.
Forced reboot? What about "forced UPDATES?" I find it infuriating that Microsoft is so presumptuous as to forcibly take control of my computer, regardless of what I'm doing, and update it.
This doesn't work anymore since they moved WindowsUpdate to another folder.
This is the mpst helpless Ive felt using a computer. Microsoft are the shittiest company of all
Stupid Microsoft. Just destroyed a several hour 3D print. They suck
doesn't work, it has been 1 all the time, never been to zero by itself
Hi windows just did the auto update and restarted my PC (Very pissed off) followed your instructions but the value was already 1 in the Value data field – Any thoughts would be appreciated
I followed this but there way no "WindowsUpdate" or even "Windows search" folder when I copy your directions
First!
